10 QUESTIONS: CHARLOTTE DOKKEDAL LETH FROM CARLOTTAS VILLAGE

What are five keywords to emotionally describe your eyewear?

Cool, Colours, Different, Danish, Design.

Who is one celebrity you would like to see with your glasses?

Well – one of our key values is that we make „frames for real people“. This is, of course not to say that celebs are not real people, but to emphasize that the people we meet in the street are our most valued target customers. This said, one of my own personal favourites is George Clooney; not only for his gorgeous looks, but also for his always down to earth, humorous attitude.

What is the typical workday at Carlottas Village like?

Busy. We try to keep hold of the entrepreneurial spirit of a start-up company although we are now 5 years old. So, personally, I have many different tasks apart from designing eyewear. We try to learn or do something new every day.

What were some of the most important milestones after founding the company?

Our first International Optical show (Silmo 2009). The first time I met someone in the street wearing one our frames (it´s still fantastic..). The first 100 customers. First overseas market. As time goes by the milestones has to be more and more significant to be recognised as such…But I guess that´s a natural development.

How many pieces of eyewear have you created so far?

Many! Hundreds probably… I don´t know exactly. I even have some in the drawer. Whats the main attraction of eyewear design to you? The creative process itself. More than the result, really.

Whats the hardest part about designing eyewear?

Eyewear design is a bit of a challenge for me, as I am a person with a lot of gesture. Doing eyewear, I have to work with the greatness of very small details and measures, which is not my natural habitat. But I love a good challenge...

Where do you get the inspiration for your creative design work?

In one word: Light. Without light, there are no shapes, no colours, etc. It is a mixture of many sources; nature, art, urban environments, people in the street, even something someone says. It´s important to secure mental space for this and there´s a lot of interesting research going on about creative thinking these days, which I follow. I´m a bit of a nerd.

Which persons has made a lasting impact on you?

My grandmother on my mothers´ side. She was the one that always supported my creative side since I was a small kid. Apart from her, I take notice of people who manage to live out their passion with high standards and empathy.

What separates your label from other eyewear manufacturers?

I think I might not be the right person to ask this question. But – we´re often told that our frames look “different from what everybody else does”. We like to think that there´s a Carlotta DNA that you cannot pinpoint exactly.
